Restart this transition period, considering the normal situation has started: Taffarel Giovani Montero

Text by Joel Jaiden

As an institution that is known by all students of Parahyangan Catholic University and as a mirror of the university, the Student Executive Board is committed to providing benefits to all students in various sectors. Considering the formation of Student Executive Board in 2021 during the pandemic, the implementation of various activities and performances carried out by BEM is limited by space and time, where the performance that is carried out needs to consider all aspects, such as health and security. However, this step didn’t reduce the spirit of BEM management. Through permission and support from the chairman of BEM UNPAR, Taffarel Giovani Montero, several work programs that have been prepared can be carried out offline. The chairman of BEM UNPAR said that the direction development of BEM consisted of three things including the development of soft skills, hard skills of students and strategic action studies and community service.

BEM has carried out many community activities such as donating children with cancer, cleaning the Cikapundung river, helping the displaced Tamansari residents, building a library in Kampung Pelangi 200 until the UNPAR teaching program. For the development of soft skills, activities such as Highlights magazine, Parsco, Makelu, Business case competition, and TEDX UNPAR. In terms of strategic action studies, we also carried out many discussions. On a scale of one until ten, it can be rated at eight. Then, talk about the influence that the student executive board exerts on the UNPAR environment, starting from students, lecturers, internal and external environment.

BEM UNPAR has moved from the internal side, such as the effect of the BEM work program on the soft skills and hard skills of students who become participants, which has reached a thousand, if calculated using the slovin approach, it has shown high validity. The enthusiasm of students to become the committee for BEM activities is also high, lecturers are also involved as supervisors. Everything that we do can increase the activity of UNPAR students, including students of the class of 2020. We can give internal influences a score of 7/10. The impact on the community is quite large from many activities carried out such as Tamansari, the 15 million Kita bisa donation collected, and UNPAR Teaching.

The campus also appreciates us in many community activities carried out by BEM UNPAR because it is not only an "event organizer". Internal influence can be rated 9/10. After running several work programs that have been mentioned previously, seeing this pandemic period which is getting more and more experienced, BEM UNPAR turns out to have several plans for work programs to be carried out offline because if you look at community projects, all of them have been carried out offline with health protocols. There are still online programs for soft skills and hard skills development. To close the period, there are Unpar and Makelu Awards Night activities, both of which we plan to take offline. The Unpar TEDX Workshop is also planned to be held offline at the PPAG Building.

This workshop activity will take the theme from the World Economic Forum for the skills needed from 2025 - 2050 in the 5.0 industrial era. However, BEM UNPAR also carried out movements to restart this transition period, such as the implementation of many socializations for students preparing for offline lectures. Here BEM UNPAR conducts socialization if there is the latest information from campus. This is necessary with the aim that new students are more familiar with the UNPAR environment with a plan to have a special committee to hold a campus tour.

the power of unity in Indonesia's differences

Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. As Indonesians, of course we are familiar with that motto, right? The motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika means different but still one, which is the work of Mpu Tantular and is taken from the Sutasoma Book. The main principle of the motto of the Indonesian state is unity and integrity.

As Indonesian citizens, we are used to living side by side with a heterogeneous society. We cannot choose to live in a homogeneous society in Indonesia. The only way for us to live in a heterogeneous society is we live with respect and appreciation for one another.

The differences that exist in Indonesia have two opposite sides. On the one side, these differences can destroy the unity and integrity of Indonesia, if not seriously anticipated. However, on the other side, these differences make Indonesia as a unique and strong nation. Why? Because even though Indonesia has many differences, people are consciously united and maintain harmony in the life of the nation and state.

A real example in everyday life is that we as Indonesian citizens must respect each other between religious communities. We must realize that everyone has the right to adhere to the teachings of their own religion. We must not impose our will or desires on others, let alone on minority groups.

So, it can be said that Bhinneka Tunggal Ika has a meaning although it has differences, in essence Indonesia is still a unified whole. The principle of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika is appropriate for us to apply in our daily life, in order to maintain the unity and integrity of the Indonesian state.

effort = result

Humans are social creatures. Therefore, we will always need other people in our life. We socialize with people around us. We always deal with a new environment, new friends, new teachers, new culture, and any other various things outside there. We force ourselves to be able to adapt to any circumstances. Every new thing that we face every day is matters. Therefore the existence of these changes, we have to keep trying to adjust and learn a lot of new things.

The efforts that we do to adapt have two different outputs, nor it makes us better or not at all, the efforts will determine either we will be on the right path or the wrong one. Most of the time, when we enter a new environment, we want people to look at us and be impressed by our appearance. But in reality, it isn’t as simple as we thought and not as good as we imagine. There must be obstacles and problems that we must face in the middle of adaptation. We might be facing some troubles when adapting to the new environment. For example, it doesn't suit our culture, people who have the opposite nature, people who don't accept us, and more other problems. These obstacles are called a burden.

We can’t control a burden that may appear while adapting to the new environment. The thing that we can control is the amount of effort that we give. The attempt that you do will determine your direction, where you will end up. Maximize the effort that we do so we can get the maximum result.

Healing Time

Street lights and buildings always faithfully illuminate a city that feels so silent in the darkness of the night and I also drift into it.

It turns out, life is not that easy and being mature is not as fun as I had imagined before.

The Condition forces me to always smile and laugh in front of people. Did not want them to see me being sad. Did not want them to see me cry.

But this time, allow me to share my sadness to the night, shed my tears which I have been holding back all this time. I’m not a robot who can always smile.

Nonetheless, I promise to myself that it will be over soon. I will not let myself drift into sadness too long. If morning comes, I will wipe my tears and smile again. I will try to keep this smile lasting forever and not only just as a mask. I believe everything will be okay.

Guys, can you believe that we have been doing online lectures for almost 1.5 years? Do you like distance learning and all these online activities? We are all doing activities from home because of the COVID-19 pandemic which unexpectedly spreads all over the world very quickly. Of course, no one expected that this virus quickly “forced” all of us to change many aspects of our lives. This pandemic is proof that no one can predict what will happen in this world. Therefore, we must always be prepared and rely on ourselves to face the changing conditions and times.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we never imagined that all our activities, especially lectures, had to be done online. It is not just students, but almost everyone is forced to adapt to this compelling situation quickly. In the long run, we have to force ourselves to be able to face all the changes and challenges of online learning. However, as time goes by, we are getting more and more used to doing online activities. We even think that online activities turn out to be more efficient because everything can be done from home. Starting with the lectures that are able to be delivered without going to the university, attending online seminars, and all online organizational and committee activities which allow us to be freer to do anything because everything happens behind our device’s screen.

Soon, in 2022, we will start doing all offline activities again. Of course, many of you are already comfortable with doing your studies online, but we have to prepare ourselves to go back to studying at our universities, interacting with friends and teachers directly. Most importantly, we have to let go all of the shackles of laziness caused by the many online lectures we’ve been through.

So, are you ready to go back to offline activities?
